Johnnie Carl Shaffer,
92, died Saturday, Dec. 6, 2014, following a brief illness. A Celebration of Life visitation will be from noon to 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service in Iowa City. Graveside services with military honors by the Solon American Legion will be at Oakland Cemetery at 2:30 p.m. The Rev. Dr. Barrie Tritle will officiate.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Iowa City Hospice or the Alzheimer's Association.
Mr. Shaffer was born Dec. 16, 1921, in Wheeling, W.V., to Herbert Dewey and Clara Jane (Anderson) Shaffer. He married Marie Strub on Dec. 2, 1944, in Titusville, Fla., where they both were serving in the military service. He served as a master sergeant in the U.S. Marines during World War II and the Korean War. Following the war, they moved to Iowa City where he worked as a mechanic and equipment repair technician at the Veterans Hospital, until his retirement in 1979.
Johnnie was a 50-year member of the First United Methodist Church and a member of the Solon American Legion. He had also been active in Oddfellows and the Good Sam camping club.
Surviviors include his son, James F. Shaffer (LuAnn) of Houston, Texas; and daughter, Mary Ann Cozine (Roger) of Iowa City; two grandchildren, Michael Shaffer (Hanh) of Houston, Texas, and Susan Kula (Nathan) of Williamsburg; two great-grandchildren, Alexandra and Isabella Shaffer; four stepgrandchildren; and eleven step-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and his longtime friend, Esther M. Burns.
Johnnie was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Marie in 2000; and two sisters.
