John William Barnes passed away March 30, 2020, at the Iowa Veterans Home. He was born June 5, 1924, to William and Florence (Harris) Barnes in Postville, Iowa. John joined the U.S. Navy on June 1, 1943, after high school. He was yeoman 3rd Class serving on the USS Ajax, AR6, discharged April 15, 1946. John was united in marriage to LaVon Casten on June 16, 1947. He was a nationwide semi-truck driver for 45 years, including 25 years as a driving instructor. John was a resident of the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown.
John is survived by his two sons, John Jr. (Jay) of Tennessee and Dale of Shreveport, La.
He was preceded in death by his wife, LaVon; brother, Junior Barnes; sisters, Iva Jean and husband Frank King, and Gladys Marie and husband Charles Gilcrest.
Memorial services for John will be held at a later date at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home in Marshalltown because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
