John Wayne Austin, 75, passed away Thursday, November 14, 2024. Visitation will be 3:00 to 7:00 p.m., Saturday, December 7, at Van Steenhuyse-Teahen Funeral Home, Vinton. Memorial services will be 2:00 p.m., Sunday, December 8, at the funeral home.
John was born February 13, 1949, in Falmouth, KY, the son of John and Marion (Cozad) Austin. After his father’s passing, he moved to Trenton, NJ, with his mother and brother, Bernie. His grandmother, Julia, played a pivotal role in raising him. John attended parochial schools, then Trenton High School. He was on the state baseball championship team his senior year. He attended William Penn College in Oskaloosa, IA, graduating with a degree in teaching. John taught history at Eddyville, IA for a short time. An interest in probation led to working in two judicial districts. Then he turned to a career in law enforcement. He worked as a Benton County Sheriff’s Deputy for over 30 years.
John married Mary Noonan on June 12, 1982. John loved being a Dad and was present for his children: Susan Austin (Juan), Michael, Jake Austin (Sarah), and Andrea Austin (Chris). He was the proud grandfather to Zoey and Charlee Austin.
John’s interests ranged from Civil War reenacting to trail riding.
