John W. Clear, 78, died Friday, Dec. 18, 2020, at
Mercy Hospital.
The immediate family will celebrate a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 22, at St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Coralville, with Father Chuck Adam officiating. Visitation for friends will be from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Church. Entombment will be at Memory Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to St. Thomas More Church or the American Diabetes Assn.
Due to the pandemic, social distancing and the wearing of a mask is required for the safety of all. Thank you.
John was born Sept. 4, 1942, in Iowa City, the son of John J. and Alice (Dicken) Clear. John attended Iowa City schools and was a lifelong resident of Johnson County.
John married Sandra O'Neil and they later divorced. On Sept. 5, 1970, John married Linda (Embree) Cobb in Rock Island, Ill.
John was a driver and supervisor with Coralville Transit for over 25 years. Before that, he had been a truck driver and an iron worker.
John enjoyed time spent playing cards, motorcycles, muscle cars and pickup trucks.
The family would like to extend their appreciation to the staff at Mercy Hospital, Mercy Clinics, and Home Safe for helping John in the last 16 months of his journey.
John is survived by his grandchildren, Marline Clear and Henrick Clear of Eltville, Germany; stepson, Rick Cobb; and his children; Brandon, Trent and Danielle; brother-in-law, Joe Meade of Woodbury, Minn., and his children, Cindy, Michelle and his Brian; and extended family.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Linda; his son, Michael; and his sister, Barbara.
