JOHN THOMAS HEFFERNEN
Coggon
John Thomas Heffernen, 82, of Coggon, Iowa, passed away on Friday, Dec. 21, 2018, at his residence surrounded by his family. He was born on Oct. 16, 1936, in Manchester, the son of Richard E. and Clara Mae (Holub) Heffernen. John was raised and educated in the Coggon area and graduated from Coggon High School in 1955. He then served honorably in the U.S. Army.
On Dec. 29, 1956, John was united in marriage to Lois Reeves at St. John's Catholic Church in Coggon. Three daughters were born to this union. John farmed near Coggon for many years and worked at the Wilson Packinghouse in Cedar Rapids until his retirement. John loved farming, gardening and John Deere tractors. His family was the most important thing to him.
Survivors include his wife of nearly 62 years, Lois Heffernen of Coggon; his three daughters, Teresa (Sam) Bogle of Oklahoma City, Okla., Dr. Sheryl (Sidney) Evans of Houston, Texas, and Jolene (Dave) Erlbacher of Harlan; seven grandchildren; two brothers, Richard Heffernen of Manchester and Virgil (Bea) Heffernen of Ankeny; his sister, Kathleen (Harold) Kuebler of Altamont, Ill.; and many nieces and nephews.
John was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Donald.
The family would like to thank Dr. Jasmine Nabi and the staff of Mercy Hospice for all of their wonderful care.

Mass of Christian Burial: 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 27, 2018, at St. John Catholic Church in Coggon, with the Rev. Nick March officiating.
Visitation: 4 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2018, at Leonard-Muller Funeral Home in Manchester, where there will be a 4 p.m. Scripture service. Friends may also call one hour before the Mass at the church on Thursday.
Interment with military rites: Mount Olivet Cemetery Coggon, Iowa.
