John Robert Tellier,
97, of Cedar Rapids, died Tuesday, Nov. 10, 2015, at the Woodlands in The Meth-Wick Community. Service: 10:30 am Saturday at First Congregational United Church of Christ by the Rev. Janice Springer. Burial: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. A visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home.
Survivors include his daughter, Diana Tellier of Cedar Rapids; his grandchildren, Kevin (Tina) Schoner of Burlington, Conn., and Kerry S. Arehart of Chandler, Ariz.; his great-grandchildren, Rachel, Kyler, Ethan and Taylor; a sister-in-law (by marriage), Jessie "Scottie" Diers; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Katherine; his brother, G. Howard "Bud" Tellier; sister-in-law, Winston Tellier; and his parents.
John was born March 28, 1918, in Cedar Rapids, the son of G. Halmer and Mildred (Herr) Tellier. He married Katherine Diers on April 5, 1941, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. John graduated from Franklin High School in 1936 and from Iowa State College in 1940. He majored in dairy industry and economics. John served in the U.S. Army from 1941 to January 1946. He was honorably discharged as master sergeant, medical department of the 121st GH. He returned to Cedar Rapids working for Cherry-Burrell Corp. as a salesman for several years. He briefly worked for Bowker Plumbing before starting his own business, Independent Container & Specialty Company.
John was an 86-year member of First Congregational United Church of Christ, serving in several positions through the years. He also was a 68-year member of Elks Lodge No. 251 and was a past president of the Iowa Dairyman's Association. John and Katherine were members of the Congenial Hundred Dance Club from 1966 to 1999.
John enjoyed spending time with family and friends. He also enjoyed traveling, fishing near Park Rapids in Minnesota and was an avid golfer! John and Kay had been with The Meth-Wick Community since 1996.
John was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather. He will be greatly missed by his loving family and friends.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to the Woodlands Nursing and CNA staff and to UnityPoint (St. Luke's) Hospice for the loving care given to John.
