John Thomas Shaffer, 47,
of Marion, died Tuesday, March 7, 2017, of a brain aneurysm, surrounded by his family. Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, March 11, at Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories, Cedar Rapids, where a visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Cedar Memorial Certified Celebrant Dr. James Coyle will officiate. Inurnment is private. Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home in Cedar Rapids is in charge of the arrangements.
Survivors include his children, Jacob Shaffer of Marion, Jordan Shaffer of Marion, Ashley (Nate) Brady and their children, Jayden Meeker and Masen Brady, all of Springville, and Allie LeGrand of Marion; the mother of his children, Cyndi (Dan Henderson) Shaffer of Marion; his parents, Norm and Marilyn Shaffer of Cedar Rapids; his grandmother, Margorie Shaffer of Scranton, his siblings, Dan (Teresa) Wilkes, and their children, Ellie, Katie, Henry and Auggie Wilkes, all of Hiawatha; Jeni (Greg) Hartford of Walford; and Amanda (fiance, Sonye Tamunoigoni) Shaffer, and their expected child in June of Dallas, Other close family members include Lisa (Scott) Langerman, and their children, Kayla and Zach, all of Cedar Rapids, Diana Ganske of Oelwein, Mark Ganske of Marion and Paul Ganske of Oelwein.
John was preceded in death by his grandparents, Thomas John Shaffer and Vernon and Lila Ruen; and an uncle, Richard Alan Shaffer.
John was born Sept. 21, 1969, in Rockford, Ill., the son of Norm and Marilyn (Ruen) Shaffer. John was a 1988 graduate of Linn-Mar High School. He was a supervisor for MCI before becoming a stay-at-home dad in 2002.
He was a member of FAST (Families and School Together). He loved pool, live music, motorcycles, fishing and playing golf. He was an avid Hawkeye and Ravens' fan and enjoyed rooting for the Packers with Jacob. His greatest legacy was time spent with his kids and the fun walking them to school. John also enjoyed walking his dog, Bentley, and the family vacations.
He was a great dad and loved being involved in their lives. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
