John Robert (Bob) Hughes was born on Aug. 12, 1935, at St. Luke’s Hospital, Cedar Rapids, to Duane and Marian (Weymer) Hughes. Bob graduated from Franklin High School in 1953. After high school, he attended Coe College before being drafted into the U.S. Army. He served that tour at Fort Lee Army Base in Petersburg, Va. While there he met and married Patricia Louise (Cookie) Crook of Richmond, Va., on June 11, 1960. The couple returned to Cedar Rapids where they lived happily together for 48 years along with their two daughters. After Cookie’s death, Bob was blessed a second time with an awesome special lady, Karen Zach, and they spent the last nine years enjoying each other’s companionship.
Bob was an avid fisherman, especially for bass and trout. He loved spending time on and near the water and always said “A bad fishing is better than a good day at work.” He loved animals, especially his yellow tabby cats through the years. Bob loved the Lord as was evidenced by his actions and how he lived his life.
Bob is survived by his two daughters, Jackie (Wally) Holkum of McAlester, Okla., and Sheila (Lynn) Williams of Cedar Rapids; and by Karen Zach of Cedar Rapids.
He was preceded in death by his parents; loving wife, Cookie Hughes; and sister, Patricia Stodola.
Memorial donations can be made on behalf of Bob Hughes to New Covenant Bible Church.
