John Henry Plotz, 87, of Cedar Rapids, died Monday, Oct. 8, 2018, at Westridge Care Center. Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 13, at St. Ludmila Catholic Church with Father Walter Helms presiding. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until service time Saturday at the church. Burial will follow in Czech National Cemetery with military rites. A vigil service will be held at 4 p.m. Friday, Oct. 12, at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids, located at 2121 Bowling St. SW. Visitation will follow the vigil until 7 p.m. at Brosh Chapel.
John was born Oct. 23, 1930, in Norway, the son of Rudolph and Elizabeth (McGuire) Plotz. He served his country proudly in the Army during the Korean conflict. John was united in marriage to Trudy Williams on Sept. 4, 1950, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids. John worked for 40 years for the Cedar Rapids Streets Department. He was a member of the Elks Lodge 251, lifetime member of Knights of Columbus, a longtime member of the VFW Post No. 788 and WFLA Lodge 13, and a 60-year member of St. Ludmila Catholic Church. He enjoyed spending time with his family and was a devoted husband, father and most of all grandfather.
John is survived by his wife, Trudy; children, Allen (Anita) and Gary (Chae), both of Cedar Rapids, and Diane (David) Gartzke of Kaukauna, Wis.; seven grandchildren, Ryan Plotz, Andrea (Adam) Meder, LeAnne (Brett) Hazlett, Alex (Vanessa) Plotz, Branden (Lindsay) Sobaski, Brett Sobaski and Calista Sobaski; eight great-granddaughters; three great-grandsons; and brother, Parlyn (Helen) Plotz of Marengo.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Leo (Elizabeth), Melvin, Thomas, Eldred (Leona) and Gerald (Donna) Plotz; and his sister, Mary Plotz.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family.
The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff of Westridge Care Center and Care Initiatives Hospice for their kind and compassionate care given to John over the past months.
