John A. Pierce, 65, passed away Saturday, Nov. 5, 2016, in Solon, Iowa, after a courageous battle against pancreatic cancer and a recent stroke.
A Celebration of Life will be at 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 19, at Solon United Methodist Church, followed by a gathering at Lake Macbride Golf Course from 4 to 7 p.m. Please wear black and gold or Cubbie blue.
Memorials have been established to the American Cancer Society and Solon Community Food Pantry, where he volunteered.
Jones-Eden Funeral Home in Washington, Iowa, is in charge of cremation.
John Allen Pierce was born Nov. 17, 1950, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the youngest son of Forrest (Frosty) and Helen (Greazel) Pierce. He was a 1969 graduate of Cedar Rapids Jefferson High School. He graduated from the University of Northern Iowa in 1973 with a B.A. degree. He was an industrial arts teacher at Clinton High School and Cedar Rapids Prairie until 1985. He then was the sales manager for Star Food Service until his retirement in 2011. He married Roxene Kay Heddens on July 28, 1990, at their home on Lake Macbride.
John was an avid Hawkeye and Cubs fan which meant he was a very optimistic, positive person. Golfing and fishing were two of his favorite pastimes. He loved to entertain friends and family on the pontoon boat at Lake Macbride. He and his wife enjoyed travel, especially cruises. He was a good and helpful friend to all.
John will be dearly missed by his wife, Roxene; one sister, Patty (Jary) Ernberger of Estero, Fla.; one brother, Ron (Karmen) Pierce of Racine, Wis.; two sisters-in-law, Claudette Heddens of North Liberty and Dr. Heather Heddens (Steve Olson) of Washington; five nieces; one nephew; four great-nieces; and five great- nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
