John Paul “Jonesy” Jones, 74, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, passed away peacefully with his wife by his side on Tuesday, Nov. 21, 2023, at his home.
Memorial Service: 2 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 30, 2023, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids with visitation to begin one hour prior. Burial with military and police honors will be held at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery, Cedar Rapids. A livestream of the service will be available on the funeral home website tribute page for John, under “photos and videos,” starting at service time.
John was born June 2, 1949, in Cedar Rapids, the son of Wilson and Jane (Baird) Jones. He graduated from Jefferson High School in 1967, and Southwestern College in San Diego, California. He served his country honorably in the United States Navy from 1967 – 1971. John was united in marriage to Sandy in Cedar Rapids in 1969. He dedicated 34 years to the Cedar Rapids Police Department where he worked as a helicopter pilot and patrol training officer. After his retirement in 2014, he became a member of the American Legion in Palo, Iowa.
John was a model train enthusiast. He enjoyed watching the Chicago Bears, Cubs, and the Iowa State Cyclones. John also liked watching stock cars, NASCAR, and Formula 1 racing. He was a very active grandpa who was always involved with his grandchildren’s events. John was dearly loved, and he will be missed tremendously.
Survivors include his wife, Sandy Jones; children, Lisa (Keith) Long and Kiley (Julie) Jones; grandchildren, Caelan Johnston, Levi Long, and Carson Jones; sister, Judy (Cris) Sell; brothers- and sisters-in-law, Thom and Karen Jennings, and Rick and Nancy Montague.
