JOHN P. SKOGSBERGH
Cedar Rapids
John Paul Skogsbergh was born June 8, 1929, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. His parents were Paul Skogsbergh and Maria Pitz. John died on Dec. 23, 2021.
He graduated from McKinley High School in 1947. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served four years with Navy Patrol Squadron P2V, stationed in Alaska, Hawaii, Guam and Japan.
He enrolled at the University of Dubuque before transferring to Coe College in Cedar Rapids. He graduated with a bachelor's degree in business (cum laude).
He married Nancy Lamb on Dec. 19, 1953, (they recently celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary). They had two children, Susan Marie and James Harris.
John began his career in banking and also worked in financial management before owning his own printing company. He ultimately retired from the Cedar Rapids Planning and Relocation Department after 18 years of service to the City, where in 1997 he was recognized for his work on the new Cedar Rapids Police Station. In 2008 he was honored by the Coe College Alumni Association with the Coe College Distinguished Service Award.
In addition to his many community activities, John served St. Paul's Methodist Church, Aging Services and Cottage Grove foundations.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Natalie.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy; his daughter, Susan (Dan); his son, Jim (Diana); his five grandchildren, Jenny (Dave), Matt (Greer), Katie, Megan and Bobby; and his five great-grandsons, Jack, George, Beau, Hank and James. He was deeply loved by his nephews, Andy and Matt; his nieces, Karen, Lynette and Liz; his sister-in-law, Jane Lamb McGinn; and his cousin, Jean Evans.
He was a devoted father and felt fortunate to live long enough to be a major part of his grandchildren's lives and to meet his five great-grandsons. John loved his golf and tennis games. He and Nancy enjoyed their special trips with dear friends. John will be remembered most for his love and devotion to his family, his kindness to others, and his quiet strength. He was content with who he was and grateful for what he had. He was adored and will live in our hearts forever.
The family is planning a Celebration of Life at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Meth-Wick Foundation, 1224 13th St. NW, Cedar Rapids, IA 52405, in recognition of the family's undying gratitude to the caregivers of Meth-Wick for the love and care he received.
