John "Jack" Michael Owens, 59, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, passed away after a long battle with leukemia, Friday, June 20, 2014, at Rochester Methodist
Hospital, Rochester, Minn. Services: 10:30 a.m. Friday, June 27, at St. Ludmila Catholic Church, Cedar Rapids, conducted by Father Dennis Juhl. Family will greet friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, June 26, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, with a rosary following visitation. Burial: Linwood Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include his wife, Shawnee of Cedar Rapids; children, Heather, Heidi (David) and Heath, all of Cedar Rapids; grandson, Cameron; siblings, Bernie (Diane), Bob, Carol Dillin and Tom (Annette); brothers and sisters-in-law, Debra (Chuck) James, Sheryl (Allan Sr.) Novak, Ben (Cyndi) Wright Jr., Jeff (Tammi) Wright Sr., Bruce Wright Sr., Peggy (Larry) Kacher and Nancy (Joe) Justice; father-in-law, Ben Wright Sr.; many nieces, nephews and cousins; and goddaughter, Chelsea (Mark) McKone.
John was born Sept. 4, 1954, in Dubuque, Iowa, son of John and MaryAnn (Scharpoff) Owens. He
graduated from LaSalle High School in 1973 and Mount Mercy in 1977. John worked as an accountant at Wilson Foods, which later became Farmstead Foods. When Farmstead closed, he continued on as a property manager for Central States Warehousing at the same location. John most recently worked for ITC. He was a member of the St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Fairfax and a member of the Sons of the American Legion.
John was an Oakland Raiders fan and enjoyed golfing. He loved wintering in Texas, and spending time with his grandson, Cameron, and his three children. John was always willing to lend a hand to his family and friends. He made many new friends at the Gift of Life Transplant House in Rochester, Minn.
He was preceded in death by his parents; mother-in-law, Dora Wright; sister-in-law, Kathleen Wright; god-mother, Del Pfiffner; niece, Dana Owens; grandparents; and many aunts and
uncles.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family.
