John S. Mummey, 65, of Iowa City, died unexpectedly Friday, Feb. 28, 2014, at his home. His family will greet friends March 5th at Lensing's Funeral Service in Iowa City from 4 to 8 p.m. A memorial celebration will be March 6th at 4 p.m. at Lensing's.
Instead of flowers and plants, the family kindly requests memorials be directed to Toys for Tots – a cause that John supported.
John was born April 29, 1948, in Iowa City, the son of Samuel and Georgiana (Hilliard) Mummey, graduating from Iowa City City High School. John attended and graduated from the University of Iowa with a degree in education.
John was a member of the University of Iowa Letterman's Club for his accolades with the Iowa Hawkeye swim team and he was a member of the FIJI fraternity.
John owned and operated Mumm's Saloon in Iowa City for 28 years, best known for the saying, "Ye who enters here is a stranger only once."
He was a member of the Eagles. He was an avid supporter of the Iowa City Ducks Rugby Club. He also worked as an optical tech-nician.
John is survived by his children, Kate (Jamake) Dudley and Ben (Clare) Mummey and their daughter Sloan, all of Iowa City, and Rachel Mummey of Jasper, Ind.; and siblings, Dr. Samuel Mummey of Montezuma and Jacqueline Fleck of St. Louis.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
