John Mott, 84, of Iowa City, died Friday, Sept. 30, 2016, at Mercy Hospice following a brief illness. The family will greet friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 6, at the Kirkwood Room, 515 Kirkwood Ave., Iowa City. Private family burial services were held at Oakland Cemetery per John's request. Memorial donations may be made to Friends of the Animal Center Foundation or Iowa City Hospice. Arrangements are with Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service.
John was born Feb. 6, 1932, in Iowa City, Iowa, the son of Charles and Helen Schmidt Mott. He attended University Elementary and graduated from City High School in 1949. He attended the University of Hawaii and graduated from the University of Iowa in 1953. He married his childhood sweetheart, Patti Crawford, on Jan. 31, 1953. She died in 2012.
John worked in the family business with his father at Mott's Drug Store in downtown Iowa City, assuming ownership with his daughter, Lisa Mott, when Charles died in 1988. He retired in 1992, when the store closed.
Survivors include his children, Vicki Lensing and her husband, Rich Templeton, Lisa Mott and her life partner, Doug Bishop, Brett Mott and his wife, Ani, Aurora Mott and her SO, Brad Price, and Tara Mott and her husband, John Helmsley; three grandchildren, Amanda Lensing, Alex Lensing and Nick Lensing and his wife, Lauren; former son-in-law, Michael Lensing; and several cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his cousin, Paul Kurz; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
