John W. Moreland Sr., 89, died peacefully Monday, Feb. 3, 2014, at his home. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 7, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church with Father Gary Beckman officiating. Burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Mercy Home Health Care or to St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church.
John was born Oct. 8, 1924, in Colesburg, Iowa, the son of Joseph and Marie Tschirgi Moreland and was raised in Guttenberg, Iowa. He served in the U.S. Army. John moved to Iowa City in 1944 and on May 18, 1951, John married Carolyn Klein at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church.
From 1939 to 1964, John was employed by John Stevens Trucking. In 1964, he became a driver and later the manager of Iowa City Ready Mix, retiring in 1989.
John was a member of St. Wenceslaus Church, Knights of Columbus, the Loyal Order of Moose and the American Legion.
John had a strong work ethic and was a loving husband, father, grandfather and brother. He was a good friend to many and will be greatly missed.
The family would like to extened their appreciation to Annie with Mercy Private Care and all his friends and the staff at
Legacy.
John is survived by his five children, John (Sandy) Moreland Jr. of Iowa City and their children, Tom (Katrina), Melissa (Tomas) and Jeff (Melissa), Julie (Mike) Hahn of Iowa City and children, Heather (Rob), Kelly (Chris), Amanda and Maren (Jason), Sally (Glenn) Vidnovic of Iowa City and their children, Sam and Anne, Frank (Sheryl) Moreland of Kalona and their daughters, Sydney and Allison and Molly (Jim) Molini of Iowa City and their daughters, Emily and Ellen; four great-grandchildren; one sister, Kitty (Clayton) Klein of Tiffin; and numerous nieces, nephews and
extended family.
John was preceded in death by his loving wife, Carolyn in 2008; their son, Tom; brothers, Verdus, Tom and Frank; and his sister, Pauline Necker.
