He was preceded in death by his daughter, Rebecca.
John was born on September 12, 1947, in Cedar Rapids, the son of John and Patricia Slade Florang. He graduated in 1965 from Jefferson High School. John was an Army veteran, completing his military service in Germany in 1969. He married Mary Louvar in Shueyville on January 21, 1972. For 37 years John was a bus mechanic for the Cedar Rapids Community School System. He was a member of the St. Clair Lodge #164, Norway, and Trinity Lutheran Church, Walford.
John was a skilled mechanic with a passion for working on cars, clocks, and single-cylinder gas engines. He dreamed of owning a deuce coupe, as in the Beach Boys song. John enjoyed hunting, reading, history, vintage airplanes, music, and watching Jeopardy. He loved family times and will be deeply missed by them.
Instead of flowers, memorials may be donated to the Norway Fire & Rescue Department or the Saint Clair Lodge #164.
