John H. McIvor, 87, of Cedar Rapids, died Saturday, March 14, 2015, at Northbrook Manor. Mass of the Resurrection will be 10:30 a.m. Thurs-day, March 19, at All Saints Catholic Church, with the Rev. John R.
Flaherty officiating. Visitation will be from 4 until 7 p.m. Wednesday at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home, with a vigil service beginning at 4:30 p.m. The family also will greet friends one hour before the service at the church. Interment, with military honors conducted by the Marine Corps League, will take place at St. John's Cemetery.
Survivors include a daughter, Michele Hanus and her husband, Martin, and two granddaughters, Courtney and Allison Hanus.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Theresa, and his parents.
John was born Aug. 21, 1927, in Cedar Rapids, to Joseph and Johannah (Fix) McIvor. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps after his junior year at Immaculate Conception School and returned to finish high school after four years of service. He was recalled for the Korean War and served there for one year. He served three years with the Marine Corps "Commandant's Own" Drum and Bugle Corps in Washington, D.C., and six months with the Camp Pendleton Post Band.
He married Theresa Pisarik on June 6, 1959, in Cedar Rapids. He was employed by The Gazette in the photo department as a photo finisher and photographer, retiring there after 43 years in 1992.
He was a member of All Saints Catholic Church, the Organ Choir, Funeral Choir and the Catholic Layman's Club. He also was a past member of American Legion Hanford Post 5, past member of Iowa Press Photographers Association, life member of National Press Photographers Association and Cedar Valley Detachment Marine Corps League.
He enjoyed all sports, particularly football, traveling, singing in the organ and funeral choirs, taking pictures in his spare time, and visiting with his grandchildren.
He was a huge advocate for Camp Courageous.
