John Franklin Listebarger Sr., 90, of Cedar Rapids, passed away March 18, 2016, surrounded by his loving family at Ridgeview Assisted Living Community.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, March 23, at 11 a.m. at First Lutheran Church in Cedar Rapids, with the Rev. Steven Knudson officiating. Visitation will be Tuesday, March 22, from 4 to 6 p.m. at Cedar Memorial Westside Chapel. There will be a luncheon following the funeral service. Burial will follow the luncheon at the Fairfax Cemetery.
John was born Oct. 27, 1925, to James K. and Rose (Hertel) Listebarger in Fairfax, Iowa. He volunteered and proudly served in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1946 and was honorably discharged. Following his service during World War II, he received his bachelor's degree from the University of Iowa and also attended the Chicago Art Institute. On Sept. 2, 1950, he was united in marriage to Marcella F. Schott in Hills, Iowa.
John worked at Collins Radio / Rockwell International for nearly 37 years.
He enjoyed his family, friends and taking care of his century farm family homestead.
John was a lifetime member of American Legion Pekomy Post 572 of Fairfax, VFW and a longtime member of First Lutheran Church of Cedar Rapids.
John is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Marcella of Cedar Rapids; their five children, Susan Toys of Dillon, Colo., James Listebarger of Dublin, Ohio, Janet "Jamie" Listebarger of Bemidji, Minn., John (Theresa) Listebarger Jr. of Cedar Rapids and Thomas Listebarger of Dillon, Colo.; five grandchildren, Aaron Toys of Denver, Colo., Lauren Toys of Honolulu, Hawaii, Evan Listebarger of Estes Park, Colo., Hanna Listebarger of Cedar Rapids and John Listebarger III of Cedar Rapids; and three great-grandchildren.
John was preceded in death by his parents and his two sisters, Dorothy Withers and Rose Marie Listebarger.
"Frank" was a very patient and inspiring man. He was a wonderful father to his children and a loving husband to Marcella. He will be greatly missed by all who have come to know and love him.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Fairfax American Legion Pekomy Post 572.
The family would like to express their appreciation to the staff at Ridgeview and also Care Initiatives Hospice.
