John "Jack" H. Schwartz, 96, of Marion, passed away peacefully with his family at his side, after a courageous battle with cancer on Friday, April 28, 2017, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy, Hiawatha. Visitation: 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, April 30, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Marion. Funeral service: 11 a.m. Monday, May 1, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Marion, conducted by the Rev. Gregory Williamson. The family will greet friends one hour before the service at the church. Burial: 2:30 p.m. Monday in Immanuel Lutheran-Buena Vista Cemetery, Grand Mound.
Jack is survived by his wife, Donna of Marion; sons, Craig Schwartz of Bossier City, La., and Kent (Audrey) Schwartz of Story City; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; sister, Judy Mumm of Davenport; sister-in-law, Dorothy Schwartz of Williamsburg; and brother-in-law, Raymond Hudlik.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Dorothy; sisters, Eleanor Schuett and Joyce Hudlik; and brothers, Robert (Betty) Schwartz and Raymond Schwartz.
Jack was born Oct. 20, 1920, in Calamus, Iowa, the son of Charles and Ida (Mueller) Schwartz. He graduated from Calamus High School in 1938. Jack served in the United States Army/Army Air Corps during World War II. On May 1, 1945, in San Diego, Calif., he was united in marriage to Dorothy Meints. She passed away April 28, 2006. On Dec. 1, 2007, he married Donna (Renfer) Moyer in Cedar Rapids.
Jack was a farmer in the Coggon and Alburnett area for many years. He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, American Legion Post 298 of Marion, Linn County Cattlemen's Association, 4-H Extension Service, Farm Bureau and Alburnett school board. Jack was a
4-H leader and sang with the Harmony Hawks for 20 years.
