John J. Burke II, 86, of Cedar Rapids, passed away on June 1, 2024, in his home, surrounded by his loved ones. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, June 7, 2024, at Brosh Chapel and The Avacentre in Cedar Rapids, located at 2121 Bowling Street SW. Funeral Mass will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, June 8, 2024, at All Saints Catholic Church. The burial will be at Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Cedar Rapids.
John was born on November 13, 1937, in Cedar Rapids, the son of John Joseph Sr. and Mable (McKenzie) Burke. His parents and infant sister passed when John was a child, and he would be raised by his stepmother, Minnie Chase. He attended Immaculate Conception Catholic school in Cedar Rapids. He went on to work at Eddy/Weyerhaeuser Paper Company where he met his wife, Ruth. They were married on May 26, 1956. He enjoyed camping, antiquing, supporting the Iowa Hawkeyes, and most of all spending time with his family. John was a long-time member of All Saints Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus; he was a volunteer with the American Red Cross; and he was a Boy Scout leader.
John is survived by his children; John J. Burke III, Dotti Burke, Lori Burke (Christopher Mallie), and Mary (Todd) Zieser; his grandchildren Brittni (Joe) Houdyshell, Scott (Tracie) Schwab, John J. (Saedi) Burke IV, K.C. (Kyle) Eberle, Sean Burke, Christina Burke, and Sage Zieser; his five great-grandchildren; his son-in-law Brian Marconi and his nieces, nephews, and extended family.
John is preceded in death by his devoted and loving wife of forty-nine years, Ruth Burke; his mother, Mabel McKenzie; father, John Joseph Burke Sr.; stepmother, Minnie Chase; daughter, Roxane Marconi; and his faithful dog Spike.
Memorials may be directed to the family or to the Catholic Church.
