John F. Huerter, 101, died Sunday, Oct. 14, 2018, at Manor Care, Cedar Rapids, following a brief illness. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 20, at St. Patrick's Church, Anamosa, with interment in the Holy Cross Cemetery with military honors. Visitation will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. Friday and after 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the church. A parish vigil service will be held at 3 p.m. and a Knights of Columbus rosary will be said at 7 p.m. Friday. Father Nick March will officiate at the services. Goettsch Funeral Home, Anamosa, is caring for John, his family and his services.
He lovingly leaves behind his daughter, Malinda (Steve) Engelbart, Anamosa; six grandchildren, Heath (Pam), Thomas (Chelsie), Jennifer (Andy) Tatar, and Matthew, Stephanie (Sam) Wendt and Katie (Lucas) Schaefer; 13 great-grandchildren, Greg, Tom, Colton, Athena, Rachael, Maggie, Isaac, Elisabeth, TJ, Olivia, Adelyn, Joel and Aubrey; and two great-great-grandchildren, Ella and William.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Neita; his son, Thomas; two sisters, Henrietta Huerter and Agnes Hutfles; and eight brothers, Joe, Henry, Lawrence, Vincent, Ambrose, Ray, Adrian and Elmer.
John Frederick Huerter was born Feb. 10, 1917, in Kelly, Kan. He was the son of Jacob and Margaret (Kongs) Huerter. John started framing at an early age with the untimely death of his father. John served in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific, European and African theaters during World War II. John married Neita Meeks on Sept. 8, 1945, in Gilbert, Iowa. The couple lived in San Francisco until John got out of the service. They farmed in Prairieburg before opening Huerter's Locker Service in Anamosa with his brother, Elmer, in 1948. He and Neita became the sole owners in 1952 and operated the locker side-by-side until they retired in 1998. John raised cattle and hogs, but had a special love for horses.
John was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus (3rd Degree), the Broken Bit Saddle Club, the Anamosa V.F.W. and American Legion, and one of the founding members of the Anamosa Area Ambulance Service.
