John D. Hornstein, 87, of Cedar Falls, died Wednesday, June 4, 2014, at Sartori Memorial Hospital in Cedar Falls after a sudden illness. Funeral Services will be 11 a.m. Monday, June 9, at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories, Cedar Rapids, with Deacon Phil Saunders officiating. Vis-itation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home, Cedar Rapids. Burial will take place at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
In lieu of flowers, memorials in John's name may be directed to the American Heart Association, 3816 Paysphere Circle, Chicago, IL 60674 or Western Home Foundation, 5102 S. Main St., Cedar Falls, IA 50613.

John was born Oct. 11, 1926, in Linn County, Iowa, to John Andrew and Mirl (Healy) Hornstein. He was united in marriage to Janet L. Wieland on June 10, 1950, in Cedar Rapids. John was an especially devoted husband and loved Janet and his family very much.
John was employed as an office and credit manager at Cuckler Steel Span Co. in Monticello, retiring in 1988.
He had been a resident of Western Home Communities in Cedar Falls for the last four years.
In his younger years, he enjoyed sports, and was most active in golf and tennis. He also supported his sons in all of their athletic endeavors. After he retired, John and Janet enjoyed taking long walks and vacations to new destinations. John had traveled to every state except Alaska. He kept his mind sharp and enjoyed playing bridge and solving crossword and sudoku puzzles.
John is survived by sons, John Steven Hornstein of Cedar Falls and Scott A. (Joyce) Hornstein of Huxley, Iowa; and brothers, Eldon and Burton Hornstein, both of Cedar Rapids.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Janet, in 2012; his parents; twin sisters, Leola Thibadeau and Viola Riley; and half sister, Eleanor Raitt.
