JOHN JAMES GUNN JR.
Cedar Rapids
John James Gunn Jr. passed away May 18, 2018 unexpectedly at his home in Jacksonville, Ark. He was 69 at the time of his death. He was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, on March 14, 1949. Private graveside services will be held at a later date at Campbell Cemetery in Iowa.
John suffered from MS, which he lived with for over 40 years. He was an active AA member for almost 25 years. John graduated from Mount Vernon High School (Mount Vernon, Iowa) in 1967. He attended Iowa State University, Coe College and enlisted in the Air Force. After serving his country for one year, he finished his degree at Park University. John became a CPA working for many different companies across the country. He was employed in Iowa, Kansas, Illinois, Vermont, Texas and finally Arkansas before retiring. He was an avid Cyclone, Hawkeye, Razorback and Chiefs fan. At family gatherings, John won his fair share of pinochle and cribbage games. He was a very independent person, and we admired him for this quality.
The biweekly phone calls will be missed by his father. They always talked weather, sports and farming, but never politics! It was a way to stay connected with each other. Sunday phone visits with his sister kept him up to date with nephews and nieces along with his grands also. He loved sharing his grandchildren's accomplishments.
He will be missed by his son, Jared; his father, Jim Gunn; his sister, Julie Thomas; and his brother, Jay Gunn.
He was preceded in death by his loving mother, Mary Beth Gunn.
A special thanks to his neighbors, Tiah and Ken, for all the help with meals, lawn mowing, grocery shopping and transporting him to doctor appointments. A special thanks go out to the Jacksonville firemen who were frequent visitors to his home. Your generosity did not go unnoticed.
Cremation arrangements entrusted to A Natural State Funeral Service, Jacksonville, (501) 982-3400. Condolences: www.anaturalstatefuneralservice.com.
