John Francis McQuillen, 92, of Marion, Iowa, passed away on August 9, 2024, at the Winslow House Care Center in Marion. In agreement with his wishes, cremation has taken place. A memorial graveside service will be held at a later date at Calvary Cemetery in Ryan, Iowa. Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service of Marion is assisting the family.
John was born on August 4, 1932, in Peosta, Iowa, the son of Clarence and Isabelle (Konzen) McQuillen. He graduated from Dundee High School in 1950 and served in the United States Army in Germany for two years, receiving an honorable discharge in 1955. On September 14, 1957, John was united in marriage to Catherine Bernadette Quint at St. Patrick’s Church in Ryan, Iowa. They were happily married for 67 years, and together, welcomed three children, Michael, Mary, and Mona. John retired from a career at The Cedar Rapids Gazette after working there for 34 years. He and Catherine sold their family acreage and moved to Summit Pointe Senior Living Center in 2020. In the words and thoughts of many, “John was kind to everyone and gentle with his words. He made each of us feel so special. He was very much loved.”
Those left to honor John are his wife of 67 years, Catherine McQuillen; three children, Michael (Dana) McQuillen of Urbandale, Iowa, Mary (Chris) Burger of Johnston, Iowa, and Mona (Dan) Estes of Cedar Rapids; four grandchildren, Sarah (Kevin) Murphy, Shannon Williams, John “Jack” Burger, and Claire Burger; two great-grandchildren, Brooks and Olivia Murphy; sister, Doris (Elmer) Manson of Manchester, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers; one sister; and many in-laws.
