John F. Krall, 98, of Cedar Rapids, passed away at his home late Tuesday evening, Oct. 26, 2021. Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Nov. 5, at St. Ludmila Catholic Church by Father Ken Glaser. Burial will follow at Saint John's Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Papich-Kuba Janeba Chapel West, 1604 "J" St. SW, where a vigil service will begin at 6:30 p.m. Visitation will also be after 9:30 a.m. Friday at the church.
John is survived by his children, Donald Krall and wife Debra, Cedar Rapids; James Krall, Cedar Rapids; and Kathleen Steffen and husband Jeff, Alma, Wis.; five grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; his brother, Bernard Krall and wife Hilda, Santa Maria, Calif.; and his sister-in-law, Jane Miller, Cedar Rapids.
John was preceded in death by his wife, Bette; son, Thomas; parents, John J. and Annastasia; and sister, Margaret Fiala.
Johnny Francis Krall was born April 10, 1923, in Marion, and moved the next month to Cedar Rapids where he lived the rest of his life. He married Elizabeth Cantwell on Aug. 17, 1948, in Van Horne. They enjoyed 65 years of marriage before Bette's death in 2013.
John was a lifelong member of St. Ludmila Catholic Church. He was very active in the church and served on numerous committees and boards throughout the years.
John was involved in the plumbing business his entire life. He was a partner in H & K Plumbing & Heating and later founded Krall Plumbing & Heating Co. in which he was active until his retirement.
He was a sergeant in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1945 seeing action in the Western Pacific and Caroline Islands. John was a life member of V.F.W. Post 788.
He was a member of the local Knights of Columbus council and assembly.
He was a member of Lodge 13 W.F.L.A. (now Better Life) and served as a Director of District 3 WFLA for 8 years. John was a member of the Cadets of St. George Branch W045 FCSLA and a life member of the Cedar Rapids Elks Club.
John was a loving father, grandpa, and great-grandpa whose infectious smile and one-liners will be treasured by all.
Military graveside services will be conducted by V.F.W. Post 788.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to Saint Ludmila Catholic Church, Discovery Living, and Horizon Meals on Wheels.
