John E. "Jack" Heaton, 77, of Iowa City, passed away Tuesday, July 10, 2018.
A memorial service will be held 11:30 a.m. Saturday, July 14, at Gay & Ciha Funeral Service in Iowa City, where a time of visitation will be held one hour prior at 10:30 a.m. Guests are encouraged to dress comfortably in casual attire, as Jack would have wanted.
Memorials in Jack's memory may be made to the John Heaton Memorial Fund.

John Edward Heaton was born Sept. 17, 1940, in Central City, Iowa, son of Leo and Esther (Shimerda) Heaton. After high school, Jack attended the University of Northern Iowa, where he received a baseball scholarship and later earned his master's from the University of Iowa. Jack spent several years in private practice as a counselor before taking a counselor position with the Cedar Rapids Community School District, a career from which he retired after many years. Jack married Sandra Lovell on Oct. 3, 1992.
He enjoyed his time outdoors, hunting, fishing, mushroom hunting and spending time with family.
His family includes his wife, Sandra Heaton; his children, Felicia Corley (fiance, Curtis Till) of Texas and Scott Heaton (Kris) of Mechanicsville, Iowa; Sandy's children, Andy Lovell (Naomi) of Minnesota and Christa Avise (Brian) of Washington; and a sister, Arlene Holub of Prairieburg, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his parents; Sandy's son, Kevin Lovell; and brother-in-law, Bob Holub.
