John E. Gibbs Jr., 62, died Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2018, due to a motor vehicle accident near Cedar Rapids.
A celebration of John's life will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 22, at First Christian Church in Vinton, with the Rev. Dave Neas officiating. Visitation will be held at the church from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 21.
John was born Sept. 28, 1955, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the son of John Edmond and Harrisetta Lee (Tharp) Gibbs Sr. He graduated from Washington High School in Vinton in 1973.
On July 8, 1978, John was united in marriage with Carol Lynn Kearns at First Christian Church in Vinton.
John worked at Midamar in Cedar Rapids.
John's joy in life came from his grandchildren. He also enjoyed shooting pool, fishing, and fast cars and motorcycles.
John is survived by his wife of 39 years, Carol Gibbs of Vinton; his mother, Harrisetta Gibbs of Vinton; two sons, Dustin (Lauren) Gibbs of Independence and Seth (Stephanie) Gibbs of Vinton; two brothers, Tim (Theresa) Gibbs of Anamosa and Dan (Sheryl) Gibbs of Waterloo; four grandchildren, Shai Williams and Jonnalyn, Scout and Hiro Gibbs, plus a special girl not yet held; and special friends, Torrey and Cheryl Roster.
He was preceded in his death by his father.
A memorial fund has been established.
