JOHN RICHARD "DICK" FARLEY

John Richard "Dick" Farley, 90, of Cedar Rapids, passed away Thursday, Nov. 30, 2017, at Mercy Medical Center surrounded by his loving family. Services: 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 4, at Cedar Memorial Westside Chapel. Interment: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. A visitation will be held from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 4, at Cedar Memorial Westside Chapel.
Dick was born June 10, 1927, in Cedar Rapids, to Earl and Ruby (Gosnell) Farley. He graduated from Roosevelt High School in May 1945 and served in the U.S. Navy on board a destroyer at the end of World War II. He married Carol Barta on April 3, 1949. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and the American Legion. Dick worked at Northwestern Bell/AT&T for over 40 years and was also a member of the Telephone Pioneers. He served as an assistant Scoutmaster for the Boy Scouts of America for several years.
Dick was an outdoorsman, enjoying gardening and hunting. Other hobbies included woodworking and electronics.
Dick is survived by a sister, Maxine (John) Zimmerman of San Antonio, Texas; brother-in-law, Tom Barta of Ames; son, Keith (Sheryl) Farley of Pinecliffe, Colo.; daughter, Susan (Edward II) Smith of Nashotah, Wis.; and grandsons, Blayne (Molly) Smith, Dustin (Julie) Smith, Edward III (Megan Smith) and Dane (Deborah) Whisenant. He is further survived by six great-grandchildren, Kieran, Rowan, Grady, Eddie IV, Madden and Hudson; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Kenneth and wife Jocelyn; nephew, Jeff; and loving wife Carol.
The family would like to thank the many Homewatch Caregivers he had throughout the recent years, who not only took care of him, but truly loved him. They became part of his extended family. Most of all, we would like to thank his nurse Lynn Vosatka who consistently went out of her way to provide care far beyond what was required and was a true friend to him.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Trinity-St. James United Methodist Church or the American Legion or any veterans organization of your choice.
