John Dean Sheeley, 84, of Marion, Iowa, passed away on March 6, 2023, at Dennis & Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha. A funeral mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, March 10, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Marion with burial at Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the church. Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service of Marion is assisting the family.
John was born on Jan. 12, 1939, in Winthrop, Iowa, the son of Dean and Lillian (Hallinan) Sheeley and graduated from Winthrop High school. On April 28, 1973, John was united in marriage to Catherine Marie McMillan in Waukon, Iowa. He began his working career at Winthrop State Bank and later worked at Lefebure in Cedar Rapids. He retired from Rockwell Collins in 2001.
He was a member of St. Joseph Parish, and his faith was very important to him; he spent much of his time in prayer for others. John enjoyed fishing, hunting, and spending time with his family. He was an avid Hawkeye sports fan and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Survivors include his wife, Cathy of Marion; three daughters, Kelly (Gary) Brinkmann of Robins, Molly (Chad) Breitbach of Marion, and Jenny (Gordon) Dirks of Marion; six grandchildren, Michael, Alex, and Abby Brinkmann, Olivia Dippel, Noah Talbot, and Lillian Dirks; and a brother, Jerry (Susan) Sheeley of Marion.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother Glen Sheeley; and his granddaughter Bailey Brinkmann.
