John Manton Daine Jr. of McGregor, Minn., passed away peacefully at home on April 25, 2014.
A memorial service with military honors will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 7, at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, Iowa City, with the Rev. William Lovin officiating. Committal will be at Memory Gardens Mausoleum. A reception will follow at the Fobian Farm, 5365 American Legion Rd. SE, Iowa City. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Home Health Partnership (Hospice), 320 E. Main St., Crosby, MN 56441.
A generous and caring husband and father, John is survived by his wife of 61 years, Patricia Daine; his son, John "Matt" Manton (Pamela) Daine III, his daughter, Deborah Daine (Marc) Bennett; his uncle, Robert Daine; his special "up-north family," Tim and Heidi McElroy; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. John Manton Daine and Dorothy Olsen Daine; his brother, Dr. William Daine; and his sisters, Mary (Allen) Sharp and Diane Cooper.
John was born in Waubay, S.D., on May 10, 1928. He was raised in Ames, Iowa, and graduated from Ames High School in 1947. Following graduation from the University of Iowa in 1952, John was inducted into the U.S. Army and he and Pat were married. John was assigned to active duty in Salzburg, Austria, where Matt was born. In 1954 they returned to Iowa City, where Deborah was born. John became partners with Pat's father, John Tucker, in the ownership of Memory Gardens Cemetery in
Iowa City and worked there until 1990 when John retired. Then John and Pat moved permanently to the shores of Big Sandy Lake near McGregor, Minn.
John embodied the spirit of giving and service to others throughout his life, especially as an active member of the Lions Clubs International, the VFW, the American Legion, the National Cemetery Association and the Elks Club. He was a member of the Delta Upsilon fraternity and a lifelong Hawkeye fan. He belonged to the Congregational Church in Iowa City and the Big Sandy Lake Association in McGregor, Minn. John was an avid golfer, bowler, photographer and fisherman.
John's kind, gentle, generous, straightforward and friendly nature comprise a special legacy that will be remembered by the many people in many places whose lives he touched.

professionals at hospice as well as Dr. Timothy Arnold and his nurse, Chris Barnaby.
