John D. Schneider

John D. Schneider passed away peacefully in his sleep on June 14, 2023, after battling T-Cell Lymphoma for seven months.
John was born in Natoma, Kan., on Jan. 3, 1946. He was the youngest of seven children born to Martin and Dorothea Schneider.
John grew up in Kansas and moved to Iowa City to attend the University of Iowa for his graduate studies in statistics, where he became a hardcore Hawkeye fan. Shortly after, he began his 40 year career at NCS/Pearson. After retiring, he went back to work at ACT for another eight years. John was an expert in strategic business development and contracting in Federal Government Services including the Department of Education, Department of Defense, and the 2000 and 2010 Census.
John was active in the Iowa City community serving on several nonprofit boards including Community Foundation of Johnson County, Iowa City Community School District Foundation, Big Brother Big Sister, Elder Services, and Goodwill of the Heartland. He was also a member of Noon Rotary of Iowa City.
John had a passion for gardening, home improvement projects, woodworking, and traveling the world with his family. He checked off one of his top bucket list items with his trip to Peru including Machu Picchu and the Amazon Rainforest. John was most proud of his garden including his tomatoes and butternut squash.
At the center of John’s world was his family including his wife, Jan, of 33 years; his five children, Beth (Al), Becky, Leo, Katie (Sean) and Kelli (Jordan); his grandchildren, Dominic (Teresa), Courtney (Steven), Noah and Ethan; his great-grandchildren, Naomi, Adam and Jenny. John adored his large family including his only surviving brother, Raymond; his sister-in-law, Berneita; brother-in-law, Aldo; mother-in-law, Jennie; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his three sisters, Elna, Ruby and Ruth; his two brothers, Donald and Richard; and his son-in-law, Tom.
Services will be held at Lensing Funeral Home in Iowa City. Visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday, June 22; and the Celebration of Life will be at 11 a.m. Friday, June 23.
In lieu of flowers, the family appreciates donations made to Dr. Eric Mou’s Research for T-Cell Lymphoma at The University of Iowa Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center or Goodwill of the Heartland. More details for donating will be available on the Lensing Funeral Home website.
A special thank-you to the UIHC, Dr. Eric Mou, and Mayo Clinic for the exceptional care John received during his courageous battle with cancer.
