John is survived by his wife, Mary Carol; two daughters, Mary (Jeff) Harris of Marion, and Lisa (John) Spelman of Farmington, Minn.; four sons, Charles (Kathy) of Naperville, Ill., Douglas (Barbara) of Cedar Rapids, Ronald (Janet) of Hiawatha and James (Dee Ann) of Cordova, Tenn.; 14 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Florence Keegan.
John was born Dec. 27, 1931, in Ladora, the son of Charles and Emma Blomme Van Hoeck. He graduated from Norway High School and married Mary Carol Gatens on May 18, 1954, in Norway. He retired in 1989 after 37 years with Rockwell Collins. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, the IBEW 1362, the Catholic Order of Foresters 1360 and the Knights of Columbus Council 5390. Following his retirement, John spent much of his time volunteering with the Catholic Worker House, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church and the Knights of Columbus. John was a veteran of the Iowa National Guard.
John enjoyed spending time with his family and following the activities of his grandchildren. His grandchildren would bring all of their broken things to grandpa to fix and knew that if he could not fix it, it was not fixable and it was time to throw it away. John was an avid Hawkeye and Cubs fan.
