John C. Schmidt, 82, of Cedar Rapids, passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 26, 2021. A private family funeral service will take place on Saturday, Feb. 6, at the Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. John Carl Schmidt was born on Nov. 29, 1938, in Worthington, Minn., the son of Clarence and Mary (Brugman) Schmidt. John was united in marriage to Carolyn Olson on Aug. 25, 1963, in Worthington, Minn. John held a Master of Arts in counseling from the University of Northern Colorado and was a longtime teacher with the Cedar Rapids School District, teaching at both Roosevelt Junior High and Washington High School.
John was a caring and giving man who loved everyone he met. He was always ready to help others in times of need. In addition to serving others, John enjoyed singing, playing cards, and was an avid fisherman. He was a Lifemaster with the American Duplicate Bridge Association and sang with the Cedar Rapids Concert Chorale.
John is survived by his wife, Carolyn; daughter, Stephanie (Marc) Hall; grandchildren, Dagny and Sintayehu; and brother, Conrad (Judy) Schmidt.
John was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Robert.
