John William Budding, 90, took his final journey to be with the Lord on Jan. 9, 2016, with family by his side.
He was born on Nov. 9, 1925, in Sully, Iowa, to Joseph Herman and Anna Marie (Van Engelenberg) Budding. John grew up in the Lynnville and Searsboro area with seven brothers and sisters. He graduated from Searsboro Consolidated High School, class of 1944. He entered the U.S. Navy in 1944 and served on two U.S. naval ships, the USS Gurke (DD-783) and the USS McKean (DD-784).
After returning from World War II in August 1945, John returned to his parents' home in Lynnville. He used the GI bill to attend Central College for one year and then transferred to Iowa State College's Veterinary School in Ames. He graduated in June 1951. While in college, he met Gwendolyn O'Banion, a nurse at Grinnell Community Hospital. They married on Oct. 6, 1951, in Freeport, Ill.
John began his veterinary career in Freeport, Ill., in 1951. He then practiced in Ireton, before moving to Brighton in 1953. The couple welcomed their children, Lynn, Susan and Wayne, while in Brighton.
John moved to Wilton in 1964 and practiced veterinary medicine there until his retirement in 1990. In 2005, the couple moved to Cedar Rapids, and in 2008, they moved to Grinnell, Iowa. John was a member of the Grinnell United Methodist Church. He loved coin collecting, reading, antique and glassware collecting, and time with his family.
Survivors include a son, Lynn (Jeanette) Budding, Grinnell; daughter, Susan (Rick) Carroll, Marion; and a son, Wayne (Diane) Budding, Wilton; five grandsons, Ryan Budding, John Budding, Tyler Budding, Patrick Budding and Arnold Carroll; and sisters-in-law, Margaret O'Banion, Cedar Rapids, and Glenna Budding, Lynnville.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Gwen Budding; his parents, Joe and Anna Marie Budding; and his siblings.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 13, at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories. Entombment will take place at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.
