JOHN BRETT SOVERN
Clearwater, Fla.
John Brett Sovern, 41, of Clearwater, Fla., formerly of Cedar Rapids, died Tuesday, April 27, 2021. A private family service will be held at a later date.
Survivors include his sister, Lindsey (Matthew) Sovern Urbanek of Overland Park, Kan.; his parents, Larry and Barbara Sovern of Marion, Iowa; nephews, Gray and Sylas Urbanek; an uncle, Chuck Gaskill of Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.; cousins, Matthew Gaskill and Lauren (Tommy) Ehinger; an uncle, Jerry Falck of Decorah, Iowa; as well as Sovern Family, Colfer Family and Rhodes Family cousins.
He was preceded in death by his uncle, John Polulach; an aunt, Susan Gaskill; aunt, Marilyn Streetman; and grandparents, John and Jean Polulach and Charles and Dorothy Sovern.
Brett was born June 15, 1979, in Cedar Rapids, the son of Larry and Barbara Sovern. He graduated from Washington High School and attended Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio, where he was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity. He received a degree in culinary arts and hospitality management from Sinclair College. Brett's passion for creating innovative menus enabled him to work at many fine dining restaurants in Tampa Bay and surrounding coastal communities. Brett owned and operated his own company, Dinnervention Catering and created a custom spice line, Blend Perfections. His career was highlighted by executive chef roles and recognition by local media. Like his dad, Brett enjoyed fishing, running, golf and the Florida sun.
