John Peter Bailey, 80, died peacefully Monday, March 16, 2015, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy.
Funeral Mass: Friday, March 20, at All Saints Catholic Church at 1:30 p.m. by the Rev. John Flaherty. Visitation will be held prior to the Mass at the church at noon. Burial at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.
Peter was born Aug. 23, 1934, the son of Peter and Elsie Bailey. He married Joan Sutton on Aug. 17, 1963. He graduated from Franklin High School in 1953 and the University of Iowa in 1957 with a B.A. degree in political science. He was a member of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity.
Peter was with the Merchants National Bank until he and his wife purchased the Morris Sanford Company in 1978. They changed the business into an office and furniture supply store. He was an honorary board member of the Cedar Rapids Baseball Club, past Exalted Ruler of the Elks Club, member of Elmcrest Country Club and All Saints Catholic Church.
Peter is survived by his wife, Joan; three children, Ann Walton, husband Mike and their three children, Alexandra, Michael and Andrew of Milwaukee, Wis., John Bailey, wife Suzanne and their four children, Jacob, Elizabeth, Madeline and Daniel of Cedar Rapids, and Sarah Doggett, husband Brooks and their three children, Caroline, Anna and Elizabeth of San Francisco. Also surviving are Mary Campbell (sister-in-law) of Prairie du Chien, Wis., and eight nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son, Stuart; and his parents, Peter and Elsie Bailey.
A lifelong Cedar Rapidian, Peter was a respected businessman, avid golfer, devoted family man and loyal friend who loved Irish music and laughter. He will be greatly missed.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to All Saints Catholic Church, 720 29th St. SE, Cedar Rapids 52403; Hospice of Mercy, Cedar Rapids; or the charity of your choice.
The family would like to express their appreciation to the nursing staff at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House for the care and kindness they gave to Peter.
