Joel Michael Smith, 63, of Troy Mills, Iowa, passed away on Sunday, Nov. 6, 2016, at Mercy Medical Center, Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Funeral services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 9, at Troy Mills Christian Church, Troy Mills. Visitation: 1 p.m. until service time.

Joel was born Sept. 14, 1953, in Austin, Minn., to Lowell and Elaine (Platte) Smith. He graduated from North Linn High School. Joel married Sally Jo Porter in Coggon, Iowa, on Dec. 2, 1972. He was a production manager at Frontier Feeds for 25 years before becoming a military antique dealer. Joel retired in 2011.

Joel was a lifelong member of the NRA and a devoted Minnesota Vikings fan. He loved classic cars, drag racing and dealing in military antiques. Joel had a gift for making people smile and laugh. His greatest love and joy was his family.

Survivors include his wife, Sally; children, Jason (Jennifer) Smith of Walker, Iowa, Jarod (Jaclyn) Smith, Walford, Iowa, and Jacob Smith of New York City, New York; grandchildren, Joshua, Jillian, Ian, Sidney, Leah and Brandon; sister, Lynne (Mark) Truax, and brother, Bruce (Nancy) Smith, all of Marion, Iowa; in-laws, Ron and Bev Porter of California, Ross and Irene Porter of California, Cheryl Jons of Texas, Rick and Mona Porter of Marion, Iowa, Susan Porter of Center Point, Iowa, Russ and Penny Porter of Alburnett, Iowa, and Rod and Diane Porter of Bertram, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews.

Joel was preceded in death by his parents, Lowell and Elaine (Smith) Lyons; mother- and father-in-law, Roscoe and Lucille Porter; brother-in-law, George Jons; and nephew, Brandon Jons.
