Joel R. Hertz, 79, of Monticello, Ill., went home to be with his Lord on Saturday, May 28, 2016, while visiting in California.
Joel was born April 11, 1937, to Carl and Marjory Hertz in Oskaloosa, Iowa. He married Ann Warfield on June 25, 1966, in Gibson City, Ill. She survives.
Also surviving are his three children and their families: Chad and Heidi Hertz of Cedar Falls, Iowa, and Ben, Anna, Grace and Ella; Nancy and Glen Just of Indianapolis and Tobin, Caroline, Camden and Maren; and Karen Hertz of Paris, France.
In addition, he is survived by siblings, Mina Jacobs of Fort Dodge, Tom Hertz of Ames, Randy (Liz) Hertz of Nevada and Cathy (Steve) Eldredge of Fullerton, Calif.
Joel graduated from Nevada High School in 1955 and Iowa State College in 1959 where he was a member of FarmHouse Fraternity. In 1960, he traveled to New Zealand with International Farm Youth Exchange, where he lived and worked on farms for six months.
He began working for Hertz Farm Management, a company founded by his father in 1959. He opened the first branch office in 1961 in Mount Vernon, Iowa, as well as a branch office in Monticello, Ill., in 1980.
He was a member of American Society of Farm Managers and Rural Appraisers in Illinois and Iowa and Realtors Land Institute. As of 2014, he was one of five Realtors nationwide to hold titles of Accredited Land Consultant, Accredited Rural Appraiser, Accredited Farm Manager and both Accredited Agricultural Consultant and Certified Agricultural Consultant.
Joel was a Rotarian and a Paul Harris Fellow. He was an enthusiastic member of the Monticello United Methodist Church, teaching Sunday school and singing in the choir.
Joel loved Jesus, Ann, his family, fishing, playing the banjo and Hertz Farm Management.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, June 10, and a memorial service held 11 a.m. Saturday, June 11, both at Monticello United Methodist Church, 212 S. Independence St., Monticello, Ill. Burial will be in Nevada, Iowa, at a later date.
Memorials may be made to Monticello United Methodist Church, The Navigators or Cru.
