JoAnn Elaine Kriegel, 89, of Marion, Iowa passed away peacefully on Monday, August 25, 2025, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House in Hiawatha. Visitation will be held Saturday, August 30 at 9:30 a.m. with the funeral service immediately following at 11:00 a.m. at FaithLife Church, located at 8300 C Avenue, Marion, IA 52302. The service may be watched online via livestream at the website: faith-life.org. Burial will follow at Cedar Memorial Cemetery in Cedar Rapids at approximately 1:00 p.m.
JoAnn was born on March 19, 1936, in Olin, Iowa, the daughter of Louis C.W. Hartwig and Lillie F. (Guhl) Hartwig. She grew up in the Olin area and graduated from Olin High School in 1953. JoAnn was baptized and confirmed at St. John Lutheran Church, in Olin. JoAnn married Jerry Kriegel on November 29, 1969, at First Lutheran Church in Cedar Rapids.
JoAnn came to Cedar Rapids shortly after graduating high school and was trained as a secretary. She joined several secretary social groups over the years and made many friends. JoAnn worked at Collins Radio for several years but spent most of her career at Peoples Bank (later Norwest and Wells Fargo) and eventually retired from the bank. JoAnn was the executive assistant (secretary) to three successive presidents of the bank for well over twenty consecutive years. Her family would often joke that she knew more people in Cedar Rapids than anyone else. She took great pride in her appearance, always being welcoming, and providing the best customer service she could.
Shortly after moving to Cedar Rapids, JoAnn became a member of First Lutheran Church of Cedar Rapids, where she was member for many years and where Jerry and she were married. Later, JoAnn and Jerry joined St. Mark’s Lutheran Church (now FaithLife Church) in Marion and have had many enjoyable years there. She found a special connection at FaithLife, and greatly enjoyed being a member. She could always be counted on to volunteer with greeting, serving communion, and bringing food and cookies for various events. She was a member of several small groups and clubs in the church and had many friends. JoAnn was kind to everyone she met and made a point to send a card or note to friends and relatives she knew were feeling down or had a happy event in life. She enjoyed taking care of the flowers and plants in her yard, decorating her house for various seasons, and watching the deer, turkeys, and all sorts of birds that would frequent their backyard.
JoAnn is survived by her husband of 55 years Jerry Kriegel; Her child Matthew (Lisa) Kriegel; Stepchildren Deborah (Brad) Christenson, and Douglas (Michele) Kriegel; Her grandchildren Olivia and Allison Kriegel, Nathan (Mikaela) Kriegel, Kyle (Paige) Kriegel, Elijah (Tori) Christenson, Tallie (Cole) Alexander and Brody Kriegel; Four great-grandchildren; Sister Joyce Lasack; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Memorials may be made to FaithLife Church in Marion. Condolences may be expressed online at www.cedarmemorial.com under obituaries.
