JoAnn Gibson Carder, 79, of Iowa City, passed away at 3:30 a.m. Dec. 15, 2016, in Iowa City.
JoAnn was born in Lansing, Mich., to Donald and Mabel Gibson on Oct. 14, 1937. She went to Lansing Eastern High School and graduated in 1955.
After many years as a homemaker, JoAnn worked full-time, went to college, and finished raising her four sons alone. She earned her nursing degree from Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids. After graduation, JoAnn worked as a nurse for University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, as a nursing supervisor for Home Life Health Services in Coraville, and later as a nursing administrator with Sparrow Home Care Network.
JoAnn was preceded in death by her parents, Donald and Mabel; and a brother, Gordon Gibson.
JoAnn is survived by her brother, Kenneth Gibson, and his wife, Vicki, of East Lansing, Mich.; sons, Kevin of Kauai, Hawaii, Dennis and his wife, Melanie, of Wallingford, Conn., Russell of Iowa City and Timothy of Fairbanks, Alaska; two granddaughters, Amanda and Emily; a great-grandson; a great-granddaughter; and a daughter-in-law, Deb Brakhahan of Lincoln, Neb.
Private services and burial will be held in East Lansing, Mich.
JoAnn was a caring and compassionate nurse and an exceptional friend and mother. She taught all who knew her how to laugh often, love fully and to persevere through life's difficulties. She will be greatly missed.
