JOAN "JOEY" VERMEERSCH
Cedar Rapids
Joan "Joey" (Supple) Vermeersch, 84, of Cedar Rapids, died Sept. 3, 2014, surrounded by her loving family. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 6, at All Saints Catholic Church, Cedar Rapids. There will be a visitation at All Saints after 9:30 a.m. Saturday before the Mass. The Rev. John R. Flaherty will officiate. Private interment will be at Mount Calvary Cemetery, Cedar Rapids. Arrangements are with Stewart Baxter Funeral & Memorial Services, Cedar Rapids.
Joey, a beloved wife and mother, is survived by Charles, her loving and dedicated husband of 64 years; daughters, Lori Ann (James) Kurtz of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Nancy Kay Vermeersch and Linda Sue Vermeersch, both of Cedar Rapids; grandson, Logan James Kurtz of Orlando, Fla.; sisters and brothers-in-law; nieces, nephews and longtime, dear friends.
Preceding Joey in death were her parents, William Joseph and Mary Catherine Supple; her daughter, Michelle Marie Vermeersch; and her two sisters and their husbands, Mary Catherine and Don Boyle and Lorraine and Don Anderson.
Joey was born Jan. 12, 1930, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and was a 1948 graduate of Immaculate Conception Catholic High School in Cedar Rapids. She was very blessed to have married the love of her life, Charles Vermeersch, on Aug. 19, 1950. Joey's Catholic faith was most important in her life, and she was active in women's circles and volunteering for her church for years.
Her greatest passions included being a loving and devoted wife and mother, spending time with her immediate and extended family and friends, reading, dancing, cooking/baking, adventure shopping and traveling.
Although she struggled with Alzheimer's disease for many years, she handled it with grace, dignity and courage. Her family feels very privileged to have cared for her during this illness, and will be forever grateful for the many special memories. She will be missed most for her caring, giving, gentle, joyful and fun-loving spirit, and her love and affection.
The family would like to offer special thanks to the many loving and caring caregivers, and most recently, the loving and special care from Christy, Jill and the compassionate care of the Hospice of Mercy team.
Memorials in memory of Joey may be directed to the Alzheimer's Association or to All Saints Catholic Church.
