Joan Helen Turley, 82,
of Cedar Rapids, died at her home on Tuesday, June 28, 2016. Funeral Mass: 10 a.m. Monday at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church by Father Christopher Podhajsky. Burial: St. John's Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Papich-Kuba Funeral Home East, 1228 Second St. SE, where a vigil service will be held.
Joan is survived by six children, Don Turley and wife Nora of Walford, Joe Turley and fiancee Sheila Smith of Cedar Rapids, Alice Dudley of Chesapeake, Va., Laura Kloubec and husband Gene of Amana, Annette Hardin and husband Donald of Wapello, and Tina Turley of Cedar Rapids; daughter-in-law, Kim Turley of Cedar Rapids; 22 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; brother, Joe Franc and wife Judy of Solon; and two sisters, Marie "Munch" Ellis and husband Bill and Helen Wulf and husband Bill, both of Cedar Rapids.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Norman; daughter, Marylou Flint; son, Eveard Turley; son-in-law, Dan Dudley; grandson, Norman Gene Turley; parents, Joseph and Helen (Dufek) Franc; infant sister, Helen Franc; and stepfather, Charles Setlik.
Joan was born Sept. 11, 1933, in Cedar Rapids. She was a long-time resident of Stumptown. She worked as a file clerk at Iowa National Mutual Insurance for one year before graduating from Wilson High School in 1951. Joan married Norman G. Turley on Dec. 20, 1952, at St. Boniface Catholic Cathedral in San Francisco. Norm died April 12, 2013. She worked in the nursery at Mercy Medical Center from 1957 to 1962. Joan was later employed at Rockwell Collins for 23 years, retiring as a supervisor.
Joan was a lifetime member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church and sang in the church choir for many years. As a young girl, she attended the Cedar Rapids Czech School for Children for six years and was a member of Sokol Cedar Rapids. Joan was a 25-year volunteer at St. Vincent de Paul Society and a member of the Teamsters Union Local 238 Retirees Group. The St. Wenceslaus High School Class of 1951 designated Joan as an honorary member of its class during its 50th anniversary class reunion in 2001.
Joan enjoyed reading, camping, fishing and feeding critters around her home such as the ducks "Mama" and her mate and the hummingbird, "Little Bit."
Joan was a very loving and caring person. She loved her family and children above all else.
Memorial contributions may be given to Camp Courageous, Saint Vincent de Paul Society and Hospice of Mercy.
