Joan "Jo" Swartzendruber, 82, of Washington, died Tuesday, March 3, 2015, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City. Celebration of Life services will be 4 p.m. Tuesday, March 10, at Jones & Eden Funeral Home in Washington, with Pastor Jim Stiles officiating. Calling hours will begin at noon Monday at the funeral home, where the family will receive friends from 5 until 7 p.m. Monday. Private family interment will be at Keota Cemetery in Keota.
A memorial has been established for Washington County Hospital Foundation.

Born Jan. 4, 1933, in Keota, Iowa, Jo was the daughter of Floyd and Blanche (Carris) Maule. She graduated from Keota High School in 1950. Jo was united in marriage to Don K. "Big Foot" Swartzendruber on Sept. 10, 1950, in Keota. The couple was later remarried on Dec. 27, 1974.
Jo lived in the Washington community until 1972 and in Minneapolis for 27 years until returning to Washington in 2001. She was a senior property manager for Sidal Realty in the Twin Cities for 16 years until her retirement in 1991. Jo worked as a bookkeeper at Sears and Montgomery Ward in Washington, Iowa, and was business manager for WACO Community Schools.
Jo was a member of the United Methodist Church in Washington. She participated in many local theater productions, especially musicals. She enjoyed traveling, reading and spending time with her family.
She is survived by her daughter, Joette Berkompas and husband Dennis of Bangkok, Thailand; son, Scott Swartzendruber and wife Teri of Minneapolis; son, Jeff Swartzendruber and wife Pat of Swisher; seven grandchildren, Jennifer Stork of Ankeny, Cari Dutton and husband Sam of Portland, Ore., Greg Swartzendruber and wife Paige of Cedar Rapids, Jenna Bartell and husband Ben of Seattle, Wash., Bryce Berkompas and wife Kristal of San Diego, Calif., Lacie Dehn and husband Ryan of Minneapolis and Zach Swartzendruber and wife Christina of Ramsey, Minn.; and 17 great-grandchildren.
Jo was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 2006; one brother, Dr. Edward Maule; and one sister, Dorothy Stoner.
