Joan Elizabeth Shank, 89, of Washington, died Friday, Sept. 25, 2015, at her home. There will be a time of gathering for friends and family at 12:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 4, at the Bethel Mennonite Church, 3185 Wayland Rd., Wayland. Beatty-Peterseim Funeral Home in Washington is assisting with arrangements.
Joan was born May 7, 1926, in Winthrop, Iowa, the daughter of John L. and Grayce Elizabeth (Skinner) Briggs. She married Dale Shank and later was divorced. She worked as a civil servant for the federal government until her retirement in 1988. She was a member of the Congregational Church at Winthrop and the Democratic Party. She enjoyed crocheting, quilting, sewing and writing letters to newspapers.
Survivors include her son, Scott Shank (Jane) of Wash-ington, two granddaughters, Kelly Shank of Missoula, Mont., and Kimberly (Erik) Gibson of Houston, Texas; and sister, Jeanette Bush of Cedar Rapids.
She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Randy; sister, Bonnie; and brothers, Bob, Allen and Stewart Briggs.
