Joan Montoya
Long Beach, Calif.
On Tuesday, July 19, 2022, Joan Montoya, an extraordinarily loving mother of four children and dear friend to many, passed away at the young age of 91, with her family by her side, at the hospital she volunteered at for 30 years, Long Beach Memorial Medical Center.
Joan was born on Feb. 25, 1931, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to Leslie and Mary (Riley) Dulin. Before moving to Long Beach, Calif., she was a bank teller at Peoples
B
ank in Cedar Rapids. With wanderlust and a love of the beach, in the fall of 1955, she and her best friend Corrine drove a car out to California for an auto dealership. They both loved the weather and decided to call (Southern California) Long Beach their new home.
Joan was a bank teller at BofA in downtown Long Beach before entering into the aerospace industry as a secretary, retiring from Rockwell in 1996. If you knew her, you knew she preferred to remain busy and productive and chose to continue to work, being hired on at Los Alamitos Racetrack as a mutuel teller, retiring from there at the end of 2015. She enjoyed life, her family, friends and her dogs to the fullest and spent her final years as a huge Dodgers fan, relaxing with Mickey and glued to her iPhone or the TV, with frequent visits from friends and family.
Joan was a devout Catholic and longtime parishioner of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Long Beach and was blessed to have Father Paolo of St. Joseph’s perform the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick.
Joan is survived by her children, Leslie (Marvin
), Jay (Lynn), Michael and David (Jessica); her grandchildren, Amber, Chelsey, Amanda, Blake and Luke; her sisters, Janis and Judy of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Kathy of Walkerton, Ind.; and her dog, Mickey.
A Celebration of Life will be planned in the future. In lieu of flowers, please donate to one of her preferred charities, American Cancer Society, SPCA, Susan G. Komen or the American Lung Association.
