Joan M. Olinger McInerney, 89, of Cedar Rapids, passed away peacefully Friday, May 21, 2021, at the Dennis and
Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy, Hiawatha. Graveside Service: 2 p.m. Saturday at Mount Calvary Cemetery. Teahen Funeral Home is serving the family.
Joan is survived by her sons, Michael (Denise) of Centreville, Va., Patrick (Sandy) of Tonawanda, N.Y., John Jr. of Belvidere, Ill., and Robert (Misti) of Cedar Rapids; six grandchildren, Kristen, Katie, Alex, Leah, Hannah and Cameron; one great-grandson, Dean and one on the way; sisters, Janell (Bob) Boyd of Mt. Carmel, Tenn., and Linda Moine of Strawberry Point; in-laws, Marlene Olinger of Strawberry Point and Leonard Smith of Terrell, Texas; along with many nieces and nephews.
Joan was preceded in death by her parents; John McInerney; daughter-in-law, Christine McInerney; brother, Jim Olinger; sister, Janet Smith; and brother-in-law, Bill Moine.
Joan was born Feb. 21, 1932, to Paul and Nellie (Farmer) Olinger of Strawberry Point. She graduated from Strawberry Point High School in 1950, where she was homecoming queen and pitched on the girls' softball team. She was united in marriage to John McInerney on June 10, 1953. Joan was a homemaker, raising four wonderful sons. She later worked as the secretary to the principal of Roosevelt Middle School and after retiring, she enjoyed working part time at Hy-Vee Grocery Store on Johnson Avenue NW. Joan was an active member of St. Patrick Catholic Church, never missing Sunday mass, or saying the rosary and daily prayers.
Joan enjoyed watching the Cubs, gardening, playing cards and league bowling with friends. Later she enjoyed playing computer solitaire, until the time of her death. Joan loved family time and will be missed by those who knew her.
The family would like to thank the staff of the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy for their loving care of their mother.
