Jimmie Franklin Novak, 94, passed away on Monday, Nov. 7, 2022, at UnityPoint Health-St. Luke’s Hospital. Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 13, at Brosh Chapel and The Avacentre, located at 2121 Bowling St., SW. Celebration of Life services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, Nov. 14, at Brosh Chapel with burial to follow in Czech National Cemetery.
Jimmie was born Dec. 4, 1927, in Cedar Rapids, the son of Frank J. and Matilda (Triska) Novak. He graduated from Wilson High School. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Jimmie was united in marriage to RoseMary Tomasek on July 30, 1955, in Cedar Rapids. He owned and operated Novak Automotive for over 45 years, retiring in 1987.
Jimmie was a gifted athlete, he excelled in softball and was inducted into the Cedar Rapids Softball Hall of Fame. He was on the Senior Pro Tour in Bowling for over 11 years, and he was inducted into the Iowa State USBC Hall of Fame in 2007, as well as being an active board member in the Cedar Rapids Bowling Association. At age 91, he rolled games of 279, 256 and 268 for an 803 series, earning a spot in the USBC record book for the oldest bowler to roll an 800 series. In his early years, he raced go-carts and participated in trap shooting. He enjoyed golfing, watching sports on TV and, most of all, spending time with his family.
Jimmie is survived and lovingly remembered by his wife, RoseMary; children, Steve (Jean) Novak, Debbie (Kelly) O’Meara and Nancy (Terry) Gucciardo; three grandchildren, Erin McArthur, Brian (Jenny) Novak and Brandon Novak; five great-grandchildren, Preston, Liv Rose, Ashlynn, Brylee and Hadley; his sisters-in-law, Della Novak and Ellyne Novak; as well as his nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his father- and mother-in-law, Joe and Rose Tomasek; and his brothers, Melvin (Lois) Novak, Ted Novak and Tom Novak.
