Independence
Jerry O. Shaffer, 70, of Independence, passed away Friday, Feb. 17, 2017, at the Iowa City VA Health Care Center. Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 22, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Center Point, Iowa, by the Rev. Dr. Scott Meador. Visitation: noon to service time on Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial: Troy Mills Cemetery, Troy Mills. Military honors by Independence American Legion Post 30.
Jerry was preceded in death by his sister, Susan Shaffer Hemstad; and his parents, Orval and Dorothy Shaffer.
Jerry is survived by his nephews, Chad Burton and Eric Burton; nieces, Kim Stetter, Katie Larson and Holly Brink; and great-nieces and great-nephews, Jake Stetter, Ryan Stetter, Tommy Stetter, Maddie Larson, Nick Larson, Lucas Larson, Bobby Brink, Joey Brink, Henri Brink, Louis Burton, Mitchell Burton, Grant Burton and Abby Burton.
Jerry was born Nov. 29, 1946, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the son of Orval and Dorothy (Taylor) Shaffer. He graduated from Alburnett High School in 1964. Jerry served his country in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War from 1965 to 1969.
