JEROME "JERRY" D. NIERLING Cedar Rapids Jerome "Jerry" D. Nierling, 69, of Cedar Rapids, died Tuesday, Oct. 20, 2015, at Manor Care Health Center following a lengthy illness. Services: 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. John XXIII Catholic Church by the Rev. Dustin Vu. Burial: St. Patrick Cemetery, Fairfax. Friends may visit with the family from 4 to 7 p.m. on Thursday at Teahen Funeral Home and after 9:30 a.m. on Friday at the church. Jerry is survived by his wife, Betty; three children, Michelle (Mark) Jensen of Cedar Rapids, Mark (Rita) Nierling of Fairfax and Melissa (Chad) Anderson of Cedar Rapids; four grandchildren, Mitchell, Mac, Katie and Bennett; sister, Julie (Dave) Olson of Decorah; brother-in-law, Bud (Sandi) Riha; niece, Lori Riha; sister-in-law, Mary (Ron) Fritz; and many nieces and nephews. Jerome Darrell was born on March 18, 1946, in Spring Grove, Minn., the son of Howard and Rita Mellick Nierling. He graduated from DeSales Catholic High School. On April 20, 1968, he married Betty Jane Riha in Protivin. Jerry worked as a buyer and scheduler for P & H Harnischfeger and then for Acro Manu-facturing. He was a member of St. John XXIII Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. Jerry was an avid St. Louis Cardinals, Iowa Hawkeyes and Green Bay Packers fan. His favorite time of the year was when the World Series or college basketball playoffs were on and he could watch the games and crack open a cold beer. He enjoyed watching his grandchildren participate in different activities and spending time with them. Jerry had a sweet tooth, especially for pie. Memorials may be directed to the family.
